What on Earth is Earthing?!

We are connected to Mother Earth in so many ways! The earth we walk on provides us with water and food. She gives us a surface to sit, stand, run, play and sleep on. She also gives us building materials in the form of sand, rocks and trees and nourishes all the other creatures that cohabit this beautiful planet with us.

A lesser known fact is that the surface of the earth is hugely healing and that connecting with this surface can give us enormous energy, keep us grounded and balanced, and cure illnesses and diseases. Because the human body is mostly water and minerals, it is a good conductor of electricity (electrons). The free electrons on the surface of the Earth are easily transferred to the human body as long as there is direct contact. When we make direct contact with the surface of the Earth, our bodies receive a charge of energy that makes us feel better, fast.

You may wonder why there is so much illness and suffering even though we are in constant contact with the Earth. Well, we may be in constant contact with the Earth, but we do not actually touch the Earth skin to skin. In other words, we rarely walk without shoes anymore. Unlike for our forebearers, who walked barefoot and slept directly on the ground, everything in our lives is highly insulated through synthetic soles, carpeted floors, multi-storey buildings and elevated beds. As a result, we are literally Earth-starved, and our bodies are chronically charged with inflammation and related/resultant health disorders.

Regular, skin to skin contact with the Earth – even if it is just 10-15 minutes a day – can drastically improve one’s wellbeing and ease and heal ailments that prevent us from living our lives to their fullest potential.

As put by Clinton Ober, the man who has brought the concept of earthing to a global audience, earthing is among “the most natural and safest things you can do to improve your health; something simple, yet astoundingly profound.”

For those of us who do not have the possibility of walking around barefoot – either because it is too cold outside or because there isn’t much nature left in our surroundings – can access the power of earthing through specially designed earthing paraphernalia, such as earthing mats and pads. Please, note that if you are taking medication to thin the blood, regulate blood sugar, control blood pressure, or to supplement thyroid activity, you should consult your doctor before using Earthing products, and then monitor the medication. An adjustment in medication may be necessary, especially over time.
